Professional Development Funds

STRIVE participants are awarded $7,200 for their own professional development aspirations, spanning over the length of the program. Participants evaluate professional development opportunities in consultation with mentor and STRIVE Director. These funds can be used for training opportunities, course registration fees, and conference registration/travel expenses. An additional $5,000 is available to those seeking a graduate degree. Below are several options past participants have chosen.

 

Workshops and Courses

AMA - AMERICAN MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION

AMA courses are led by senior executives, managers, authors, educators, consultants, course developers, and CEOs. The faculty add value to every course, not only through their practical, action-oriented presentations—but also through the practical advice they offer and the opportunities throughout the seminar session for the one-on-one mentoring critical to effective learning. Annual Pass subscriptions are available which allow purchasers to choose from a large and varied selection of classroom and live online seminars and workshops.

 

UC SAN DIEGO - RADY SCHOOL EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

Located on the UC San Diego campus the Rady School offers career development training courses that help develop and hone skills necessary for leadership and business success. They boast dynamic content, contextual relevance and specialized offerings in a variety of topics.

 

DALE CARNEGIE

Dale Carnegie specializes in offering effective communication training courses that help participants master the human relation skills demanded in today's tough business environment. Attendees learn to strengthen interpersonal relationships, manage stress and handle fast-changing workplace conditions. They develop more effective communication skills and are better equipped to function as a persuasive communicator, problem-solver and focused leader.

 

Conferences

WACUBO BMI

The Business Management Institute (BMI) is designed to deliver the administrative skills and management concepts needed by individuals who are in the business of higher education. The multi-track, multi-year, institute has curriculum applicable to the continuum of professional career levels across college and university management disciplines. BMI is an immersion program with a four-track curriculum. It is designed to develop early-stage professionals and/or those new to higher education business and administration starting with Track 1 through progressively experienced, decision-making professionals with Tracks 3 & 4. The program is designed to allow participants to complete which ever track(s) they find applicable.

 

Professional Certifications

Specialized certification choices are determined by mentee in consultation with mentors and program director. Possible certifications include:

  • PMP (Project Management Professional): PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP) ® credential is the most important industry-recognized certification for project managers. Globally recognized and demanded, the PMP® demonstrates experience, education and competency to lead and direct projects.
  • PBA (Professional in Business Analysis) or CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional): Certifications that highlight expertise in business analysis/process improvement focusing on the ability to work effectively with stakeholders, define business requirements, shape output of projects and drive successful business outcomes.
  • CICS (Certified Internal Control Specialist): This is a personal, professional certification of competence that is granted to individuals who meet the requirements of the certification program. Individuals must demonstrate an understanding and comprehension of the Internal Control Common Body of Knowledge (CBOK.) This competency prepares the internal control specialist to assist organizations to design and/or assess internal controls and to assist management in installing internal control processes.
  • CPF (Certified Professional Facilitator): This is a professional designation requiring demonstration of Core Facilitator Competencies. The Core Competencies represent a fundamental set of skills, knowledge, and behaviors that support effective facilitation of group processes in a wide variety of contexts.

 

Graduate Degrees

MBA or OTHER GRADUATE LEVEL DEGREE

Pursuit of a graduate degree is supported through partial reimbursement of tuition fees. Institution and degree type are determined through discussion with mentor and program director. GRE boot camps and exam fees can be included in the electives selected by the participant.
